Our first night in town we walked down the street from our hotel to Playwrights Act III Irish Pub. Playwright’s menu features Irish & American style dishes, deliciously paired with any beer, cocktail or wine. The hotel and Playwrights was located just blocks from Macy’s & Madison Square Garden/Penn Station. We had a very nice dinner, enjoyed some drinks and made our way back to the hotel for an early wake-up call. The next day, after the Thanksgiving parade, we went to Playwright Pub for our traditional Thanksgiving meal. We had butternut squash soup, oven roasted Vermont turkey with herb stuffing, served with garlic mashed potatoes with rosemary gravy, scallion mash and turnip puree and desserts. It was very good and more than we could eat. Save Save Save Save
After seeing all the balloons, we found the subway and headed back to the hotel. On the way, we stopped in at the Playwright Irish Pub and Restaurant. The Pub was just 5 doors up from the hotel. We could stop, have dinner and then be back in our rooms in five minutes. Sounded great. First thing we noticed that the waitress had an Irish accent, seemed appropriate and added to the Irish pub atmosphere. This was the Shepard pie, a great thing to order in an Irish Pub!
The idea of Walking Tacos was a great thing for the large group of people we had for dinner on Sunday night. This is not so much a recipe…but a GREAT idea…and if you ever need something easy for a group be it family, friends or sports team this is a great food to serve. They also make great “hand-held” food for in front of the TV. Yield 6 tacos 1 lb ground beef 1 packet taco seasoning mix tomatoes chopped lettuce chopped onions (I use tops of green onions) black olives sliced shredded cheese (Mexican blend, cheddar, Colby…whatever works for you) sour cream taco sauce or picante sauce individual lunch-sized bags of corn chips (We used Doritos) Directions Brown ground beef, drain, return to pan. Add Taco seasoning mix according to directions on packet. TO ASSEMBLE: Carefully open a bag of chips along the sealed direction being careful not to”tear” …
This is the tent Steve purchased, it was cheaper to buy instead of renting one for the weekend. They didn’t put the sides on since it was going to be nice weather. It made a nice area to sit and visit before and after lunch. Rick had tables we used and Bob got chairs from work, it does take a village to have a get together! Some of the pictures seem like repeats but there might be one person different and I wanted to get everyone I could into the pictures. The kids table, looks like they had enough to eat.
Samantha made us a menu sign for our 4th of July Lunch. It helped people to see what was on the buffet as they were waiting in line. She really enjoys doing crafts and making posters. Maybe she will go into marketing or graphic arts when she gets older. When the conversation started on having this 4th of July weekend, my first thought was we don’t have enough room on the pool deck for all these people, plus food. I thought it would be nice to have a table attached to the back of the fence and to have tables setup in that area for eating. One afternoon Steve and Rick went wood shopping, pulled out the electric saw and by the end of the day we had a very nice place to put our food. The tables fold nicely up to the fence when not in use and hang …
Q39 is a BBQ restaurant on 39th Street in Kansas City that blends national-championship barbecue with wood-fire grill techniques. They have been open for one year and usually have a long line to get in unless you go out of the “normal” eating times. We were introduced to Q39 by John and Helen. They seem to know all the good eating places and we enjoy going out with them. We usually order onion rings to have while we are waiting for our food. They are made in-house and are very good. My favorite dish to order is the Judges Plate. You can pick three meats for your plate and two sides. The meats are spare ribs (2), sliced brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken and sausage. I like the ribs, brisket and chicken best. They also have slaw made with green apples which is unusual and great tasting. There beans are …
We, being the Neighbors, went to Nite at the Races. This is one of CASA’s annual benefit event. Rick always pays for a table and we go and have fun. The event consists of a buffet style dinner and 8 actual horse races shown on-screen. Guests use fun money provided in their race packets to place bets on the horses, which are sponsored and named by area businesses. Rick always sponsors a horse he names for his wife Rumi. Dee and me standing in line to place our bets. Rumi and Dee waiting for the evening to start. Steve, me, Dee, Katy and Gail (Katy’s friend) at our table. Rick, Rumi, Mark and Val were also at our table but they were checking out the silent auction items when the photographer came by. The buffet is always BBQ with potatoes, baked beans, salad and this year assorted cup cakes for …
The parking lot of The State Line is in Texas and the restaurant is located in New Mexico so the restaurant is aptly named. This is the court-yard of the restaurant, a nice place to eat outside. The decor of the restaurant was full of Western memorabilia including Western art, mounted deer antlers and Texas Longhorns, livestock trophies, framed enlarged antique postcards, and vintage advertising.  We arrived around 6:30 and it took a little over an hour to be seated. We sat in the bar area and had some drinks while we waited. Once we were seated, we placed our orders. We had some of their homemade bread, wheat and white, while we waited for our food. The bread was served with European style whipped butter blend, whipped honey spread, and the tiniest cube of real butter labeled dairy Wisconsin. Steve was not feeling well, thought it might be from our …
Julio’s Cafe was established in Juarez, Mexico and we use to eat there in the early 70s when we went over to the Pronaf area. The restaurant had a terrace and the famous “Chinaco” Bar, where musical groups performed. They still have live musical performances in the El Paso restaurant. Nice Mexican music provided by a woman singer. We started off with drinks and ordered the Appetizer sampler. I had a peach margarita, which was different than any I had ever had. It was really sweeter than usual, which I liked. The Appetizer sampler was very good with lots of cheeses and different items. I had the Chicken Flautas, an order of about nine rolled crispy tortillas filled with chicken and topped with guacamole. It was very good but too much food so had to get a box. I don’t have a picture of what Steve had but guess this was …
