The New Theatre Restaurant has a sleek new look, a blend of art deco and futuristic elements that represents a top-to-bottom redesign of the theater, lobby, restrooms and serving areas. The updates are a nice addition to the buffet and plays. The new chairs had not arrived in time so we had the old chairs, which aren’t that bad. We have season tickets and love our table. We are on the 8th row, center of the stage at a table for six even though there is only four of us. “Forever Plaid†was the first show presented by the New Theatre when it opened in 1992. “Forever Plaid” is an internationally acclaimed musical revue that tells the story of four young, eager, male singers. The group in 1950 meet their demise in a bus crash on the way to their first big concert.  Every evening they return from Heaven to …
Steve, Kristie and I had lunch at the Family Bistro this morning. This place use to be the hot dog place, until the girl who was running it decided to open a different kind of eatery. Which was bad in the fact that she had some very unusual hot dogs. We haven’t heard many good things about her new place. We did like the Bistro so guess it is a better since they have a wider menu. Steve had a California Crepe. He said it was delicious and would have it again. Kristie and I had sandwiches, chicken club and chicken salad. They were both really good. We will go back again.
We went to BRGR Kitchen & Bar for dinner before seeing The Book Of Mormon at the Music Hall. BRGR is located in the Power and Light District in Kansas City. Prices were reasonable, unlike some the P&L establishments. The food was good but our waitress was having problems getting things right and remembering to bring things we asked for until reminded. BRGR stands for the owners’ initials, I thought it stood for burger, who knew! They had a wide selection of beers and wines as well as craft cocktails to complement our meal. This is the bar area. This is the burger, The Big Hoss, that I ate. It was very good I ate it without the bread, there’s a lot of food there! It came with a small bottle of Tabasco on the side. I told them they could keep it, not a big fan of Tabasco.
Steve had a drink table set up on the back porch and had a nice selection of drinks. The dining room table had food on it and there was a warmer on the stove with things that need to be hot.
We had a small get together for New Years Eve and the next few post will tell you about the evening as it unfolded. The Geiss and Bender families came for dinner. Ted had to work so he wasn’t able to come but we sent food home for him the next day. I made Turkey and Ham Tetrazzini. This is a recipe I use to make all the time when we were in the military. It makes a huge amount and it was so easy to make for dinner parties. It can be cut in half and it freezes well. Along with this I made a Garlic Parmesan Pull-Apart Bread that Kristie had made when we went down for Thanksgiving in 2013. Turkey and Ham Tetrazzini Serves 12 (2 casseroles) 14 ounces elbow spaghetti (4 cups) 2 tbsp. salad oil 2 cans (10 ½ oz. each) condensed cream of mushroom …
Tonight we had dinner at Anton’s, a new place for us.  Anton’s is a taproom, restaurant and butcher shop in the heart of Kansas City’s Crossroads district. Dee and I had the smoked salmon sandwich dressed with herb cream cheese, pickles, lettuce and red onions with a side of slaw. Steve and Holan had the house burger with cheddar cheese and picked onions and a side of fries. The restaurant, which feels like a bar that happens to serve food from the adjoining butcher shop. This may be the only restaurant in Kansas City that offers both grass-fed and grain-fed beef, cut to order and priced by the ounce. The meat is butchered and aged in-house. Anton, the owner, is also growing herbs for seasoning and greens for salads in the basement. The building dates to 1898 and originally was a grocery store. For 30 years it was Irene’s, a …
Our grand-nephew turned three recently. The party was held at a park and it was a wonderful afternoon to be outside. The kids enjoyed the park and the adults enjoyed chatting under the shelter. There were balloons, poppers and of course cake and ice cream. Amy decorated the Spider Man cake, really cool, and she did a great job, and tasted good, an added bonus. This is a short video of the group singing happy birthday.
This was our breakfast this morning. Steve had the Eggo blueberry waffle and mine was the Jimmy Dean’s light breakfast sandwich. Â
A couple of years ago, we were really interested in making apple chips. However, we couldn’t figure out an easy way to make them. We did think that a dehydrator was the answer. Rick and Suzy were here visiting at that time and started looking at yards for the dehydrator. It took almost a year but they were able to find one. Mark, our neighbor, has an apple tree hanging over his fence. Steve went over today and picked some apples. Not sure what typed they are but it didn’t matter for our first experiment. I got the apples peeled, covered them with cinnamon sugar and put them into the machine. After eight hours the apples were dry but not crisp so into the oven they went. In a few minutes they were brown and crisp. The apple chips were very good, so good I forgot to …
We gathered around the fire pit to watch the fireworks. We roasted marshmallows and made s’mores. Dee dropped one of her marshmallows and Phyllis roasted one to a golden brown. The pictures are a little fuzzy because of the low light.
