We entered the Illusionarium, an immersive and technologically enhanced dining room, for the Cirque Dreams and Steam show. The show is inspired by Science Fiction, Victorian Fashion, Steampunk & the Industrial Revolution. We were seated by our hostess. Steve had reserved the “floor” seating, as it was billed as closer to the stage. The hostess and staff was dressed in steampunk style garb. They offered us drinks and then gave us a menu to let us know what we would be eating. While we were waiting for and during our dinner cast members came out dressed in incredibly elaborate costumes. The first lady was dressed in the Industrial style with her being made of metal pipes. None of the “characters” were named so I named some of them. This one I called the clock lady. I didn’t get a photo of her clock down. She walked around with the clock up …

“Million Dollar Quartet,” the Broadway show that follows a night, December 4, 1956, during a jam session at the Sun Record Studios, in Memphis, Tennessee, with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. Perkins had come into the studios, accompanied by his brothers Clayton and Jay and a drummer by the name of W.S. Holland to record some new material. Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, wanted to spice up the instrumentation brought in Jerry Lee Lewis to play piano on the session. Conversations about the music business are intertwined with the music. The person portraying Jerry Lee Lewis did an outstanding job. We had seen this show at the New Dinner Theatre in KC so we already knew the story line and music.
Cagney’s Steakhouse is a wonderful place to have dinner on a NCL cruise, this one is on the Getaway. Cagney’s is a signature restaurant that is dimly lit and discerning affair, marked by dark woods and neutral tones. By using one of our meal credits, we were able to dine on starters, sides, and desserts plus one entrée. Once we looked at the menu, we found lots of things we would like to order. But knowing we would not be able to eat all of them, the dilemma was what to order. We all ordered our starters and the Surf N Turf which included a tender and succulent filet mignon and shrimp. Then we had to make a selection from the 15 different sides. To top off the evening we had some wonderful desserts. Cagney’s is a place for foodies!!!
This was a wonderful wood carving in front of the Havana Cigar store. Along the path was a coconut water cart, in case you need a quick drink. The shore line of the island. The sunlight reflecting on the water waves made it sparkle. As we left, we discovered the shopping area was designed as a maze, designed to keep cruise passengers rotating in and out of the shops. There are signs for the exits but they were hard to find. Going back to the ship, you could see the flags flying, the trolley waiting, the ships and people coming and going.
Fred found a bar, in September when he was in Costa Maya, that he really liked. We wondered through the maze of shops until we found the stairs leading up to The Flavor of Mexico. It was an interested restaurant/bar and the drink menu was printed on an an oval shaped wooden palette. Each of the booths had swings for seats, there was a colorful mural, hearts hanging from the ceiling and a wonderful 180 degree view of the port and the cruise ships. We found a table over looking the dolphins playing. While they played with their balls we enjoyed drinks. We could hear the birds from the Aviarius and watch the waves of the sea. An Aviarius is a collection of elevated bird enclosures connected by a series of bridges. For $12 you travel over the bridges to each hut (bird cage) to feed and interact with hundreds …
Our 3rd stop on this cruise was Costa Maya. We had breakfast in the dining room, then spent a couple of hours in the hot tubs. Most of the people had gotten off the ship so the tubs were pretty empty. We did have a nice conversation with a couple from Canada, before going to lunch in Savor, one of the main dining rooms. After lunch we made our way off the ship. We had been to Costa Maya before and had not found any excursions we were interested in doing. Seems like the last time we were in Costa Maya we tendered, took a small boat, to shore. This time a brand new and very long pier stretched out along the water. We could walk or be transported via a complimentary shuttle, to a new entrance into the shopping area. We took the shuttle. Once off the shuttle, a friendly …
We arrived at Harvest Caye, Belize and was very surprised to find that we were not on the mainland of Belize. The last time we were in Belize, we had tendered to the port, which was your usual cruise ship experience. There was nothing usual about this beautiful cruise port. It is owned exclusively by Norwegian Cruise Line. It took four years and $50 million to creating this paradise. The materials used to construct port were sourced locally from Belize. Our ship docked and there was a long canopied pier connecting us from the ship to the port. It was a good 15 minute walk down the pier or there were carts to take passengers to the port entrance. On arriving at the port, we were greeted by the lush greens of Belize’s forests, The paved paths lead to different facilities available on the island, starting with the shopping area …
Local artist were commissioned to create wood carvings featuring Belize wildlife. Carving of a large iguana side by side with a smaller iguana is huge, it’s about 5′ high at the head of the iguana and 10′ long from head to tail of the larger iguana. Iguanas are a common sight throughout the Caribbean. This elaborate carving is one of a series of wood sculptures depicting the wildlife of Belize. We were amazed at all the unusual plants on Harvest Caye. The variety of flowering plants included Hibiscus, Jatropha, Jasmine, Ixora, and Heliconia
Before we got off the ship to visit the shops, we spent some time on the balconies. Fred had his magic tool to open the dividers between our cabins. This allowed us to have room for all four of us to see and chat with each other. We watched some divers, some men standing in the harbor holding up a tarp and fellow shipmates trying to walk on water in a ball. After we spent some time off the ship once again, we settled in on our balconies. The same divers, men holding up the tarp and people trying to walk on water were still working at it. We never figured out exactly what the divers were doing. At times the rain got heavy but they kept working. But they finally pulled the boat back towards the tarp and the men closed in the opening of the tarp. They were …
