In May of 1992 we arrived in Lansing KS from Kaiserslautern Germany and purchased the house on Bambi Ct. Living in small military apartments for the pass three years we were excited to search for a house with a yard. I had wanted a house that people wouldn’t be directly living behind us. We had lived in a fish bowl for so many years, I was ready for a place our neighbors could not peer into windows when the curtains were open. When we finally found the house there were neighbors behind us but the house was the best we had found in our searches. We were only going to be here for three years so it would work.
We had a great yard to put in an above ground pool but the hill side that lead up to that location was not the best.
The next summer after the pool was in Steve worked on improving the path.
Steve added round stones to make a path to the hill. It was a great idea and made a lot of sense. However, when he traveled I did the mowing and did not enjoy maneuvering around them. So I got my shovel out and planted them in the ground so I could mow over them.
In 2008 Steve installed prefab stairs which was a great improvement over the stepping stones. It made going up the hill much easier and they looked a lot better.
The spring of 2011 arrived and it was time for another change. The round stepping stones were replaced by blocks of stones that Steve made with a 19″X19″ paving mold and concrete. One day he was driving by the McKay house, on the corner of Main Street and Olive, seeing this designed walkway. Mr. McKay was very nice in offering the use of his mold. Steve also made a railing of PVC to help climbing the steps. A very small piece of the railing can be seen in the upper left corner. Also on the right side of the second photo below.
The hill side was very pretty with all the plants but there was a lot of grass growing in between them and so hard to keep the weeds out.
We had been looking for someone to terrace the hill side when a group, Country Side Tree Service, arrived to trim trees in the neighborhood. We show them the layout of we had in mind. We agreed on a price and they went to work – with their shovels. It was amazing watching them dig it out and former what we now have.
At the time we had them plant grasses. They were small the first couple of years. We had wanted a cleaner look and I think we got what we were got that look.
The stones on the walkway were not staying down when we walked on them. Steve and Rick reworked the setting sand and replaced a few stones to make it more stable.
After a few years, the grasses got so big and were so hard to cut down it was time to change them out with some small.
The smaller plants are much more manageable. However, looking at this current photo looks like we lost our clean look somewhere along the way.
The lawn guys ran over the walk from the top of the hill to the pool gate so Steve once again got busy and built another walkway.
