“Splish Splash” is a daytime water show done by the same performers who did “Oasis of Dreams”. This is the largest freshwater pool on a ship. It is amazing how the custom built lifts rise for water ballet and lower for high diving.
The Boardwalk offers a taste of Coney Island at sea. The carousel was the first one on a ship. The 21 figures of this old fashioned attraction is hand crafted out of poplar wood. There are traditional carnival games along with places to eat – Johnny Rockets, Seafood Shack, Donut Ship, ice cream parlor and a candy shop. Steve was looking forward to the juggling classes but this week was their weeks off. We never knew when DreamWorks characters would show up around the ship. They were always entertaining and fun to watch. The Boardwalk at night.
After having dinner we went to the Oasis of Dreams Show. It was a highly choreographed water show. Eighteen performers–6 divers, 4 synchronized swimmers, 2 specialty divers, and 6 acrobats perform in the Aqua Theater, an open air Amphitheatre and its 17-foot, 9-inch deep kidney shaped pool. Three pool lifts, lighting, a trampoline and underwater cameras enhance the shows. The divers use 3 different locations–the 3 meter springboards and two spots on the huge towers–one at 10 meters and the other at 18 meters. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960sI don’t know which was more fun watching the action on stage or watching Samantha’s reaction. She seemed to enjoy the singing and music. It was a fun afternoon!
For our first play, we went to see “Jersey Boys,” which was just across the street from our hotel. The musical opened on Broadway in 2005. “Jersey Boys” is known as a jukebox musical with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. It is presented in a documentary-style format that dramatizes the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey. The play takes you through the  formation, success and eventual break-up of the 1960s rock ‘n roll group The Four Seasons.  “Jersey Boys” has the advantage of featuring singers that actually sound like the singers they are portraying and a technology-enhanced band that approximates the original sound of their music. Jersey Boys won four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The sets are simple …
