After our morning tour of Shangri La we went to Buzz’s for a relaxing lunch. Buzz’s has a festive tiki-hut atmospher that takes you back to an old Hawaii. Buzz’s was decorated for Halloween not only at the entrance but the banyan tree, we sat under on the large outdoor lanai, had a witch’s, hat, a moon and a spider with it’s web hanging from the branches. Buzz’s, a legend in its own time. is remarkable, considering the place has never spent a dime on advertising and sustains its popularity on word-of-mouth referrals. Started on nothing but a will to survive after previous restaurant deals and partnerships went sour, Bobby Lou and her ex-husband Buzz Schneider bought an old beach house in 1962 and turned it into a steak-house. They served grilled steaks, chicken and kabobs. Nothing on the menu was over $4. The menu was etched into a six-inch …
After visiting with the turtles at Turtle Bay we headed to lunch at Haleiwa Joe’s Seafood Grill. It was very nice little grill with a great patio, the weather was perfect for eating outside. They had a nice menu and really good drinks. We really liked the glasses so we bought some to bring home. In the bottom of the glass there was sand, a star fish and other cute sea things. We had eight Mai-Tais, three Long Island Ice Teas and one Gordon Biersch. They were all good, so cute with the umbrellas and fruit. The drinks helped pass the time until we got our food. The Fresh Island Fish Tacos was grilled fresh island fish on field greens wrapped in a flour tortilla & served with Santa Fe sauce & pico de gallo. Joe’s Pulled Porlk sliders were made from slow roasted pork with Hawaiian glaze on sweet …
During our trip to Hawaii we went to Waikiki Beach several times. On this day, it was our first visit. We had stop for drinks at Hawaiian Hilton Hotel and Hale Koa Hotel. We had Mai Tais at each hotel but the ones at the Hilton were my favorite. At $15 a piece, they should have been good! They also looked good and they didn’t slight you on the booze. After a couple of these I moved onto the Danno, a frozen drink named after the character from Hawaii 5-0. These are the Mai Tais from Hale Koa Hotel, they were only $9 and also carried a punch! We had a couple here before going to the Hilton By this time we were needing some lunch, I had the Hawaiian Loco Moco. It was a wonderful dish layered with white rice, a burger patty, two fried eggs topped with Maui …
October of 1974 we went to the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany and gave Kristie beer for the first time. in 1978 we were at Suzy’s and Holan had her first beer. In looking back on these pictures, something makes me think we were not being very good parents.
To layer the liquids in the American Flag you use the lightest liquid, then a the next layer must be 10 proof higher than the first with the last being 10 proof higher than the middle. The top two layers are poured slowly over the back of a spoon to keep the liquids separated. The lemon drop martini’s glass is rimmed with sugar and the lemon floating has had sugar sprinkled on it then vodka poured over the sugar and set on fire with a lighter. The lemon is then placed into the glass while burning. To prepare a Black and Tan, first fill a glass halfway with the ale, then add the Guinness Draught. The top layer is best poured slowly over an upside-down tablespoon placed over the glass to avoid splashing and mixing the layers.A specially designed black-and-tan spoon is bent in the middle so that it can balance …
We took a bartending class downtown Kansas City MO at the Professional Bartending Schools of America. We are holding our Mojitos. A mojito is a cocktail that consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime juice, sparkling water and mint. The bar station had three compartment sinks, stainless steel ice bins, Wunderbar soda gun and liquor speed racks. We had time behind the bar to practice pouring shots without using a shot glass.Holan was having just a little too much fun! Holan and Kristie are tasting the drinks from the cascading bar trick Kristie tried to do. She wasn’t given very clear instructions by Beth, our instructor, so it didn’t work out too well. After watching Kristie Holan tried it and is part of this video.http://youtu.be/fVcBTeStwFsThis is Kristie doing a shot with no hands. This shot is the American Flag until you light it on fire then it …
The NCL Epic’s SVEDKA Ice Bar is made using 1,585 gallons of water and is set in changing hues of blue, green and purple LED lighting that simulates the Northern Lights to create a distinctive arctic atmosphere. After lunch we stopped in at Captain’s Corner for some duty-free liquor to take back to the villa. They also had a nice selection of island t-shirts, souvenirs, and cigars from all over the Caribbean. We walked back to Slim Man’s parking lot and saw this Iguana walking down the sidewalk with his banana. On the way back to the Villa we stopped at The Market Place. This is a sanctuary of retail shops, galleries, and food and dining options. The Marketplace is home to Starfish Market, St. John’s largest and best grocery supermarket, St. John Hardware, Chelsea Drug Store and much more! We purchased things we might want during the week but was very careful since the prices were extremely high. It also appeared that there was two price when we got to the cash register, one for the locals and one for tourist.
